Specialized care for reproductive hormone disorders.

Dr. Glueck has extensive experience evaluating and treating PMOS, Classic and Non-Classic Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, ovarian dysfunction (irregular periods) and infertility as well as perimenopause and menopause.

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), affects 10-20% of reproductive age women. Although common, PMOS can be challenging to diagnose, particularly for physicians who do not focus in this problem. Simply put, PMOS is a hormone problem that involves higher testosterone hormones from the ovary (called androgens) and heightened insulin resistance. In women, the effect of extra testosterone can cause irregular periods, acne, extra hair growth (hirsutism) and/or hair thinning on the scalp (alopecia). Insulin resistance can cause difficulty with weight loss and increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Menopause and Hormone Replacement Therapy

Every woman progresses through perimenopause and menopause in a different way. The symptoms of menopause are extremely varied and can be very debilitating. The majority of women who are close to their menopause are good candidates for hormone replacement therapy with FDA approved medications using either estrogen alone or estrogen in combination with progesterone. The decision whether or not to use hormone replacement therapy needs to be made carefully with the risks and benefits of therapy discussed in detail with highly individualized care.

Hormonal issues affecting fertility.

Some fertility problems are related to underlying endocrine conditions, including PMOS, thyroid disease, pituitary disorders and other causes of irregular or absent ovulation. Dr. Glueck can evaluate and treat these hormonal causes of difficulty becoming pregnant and, in selected patients, provide ovulation induction and monitoring.

When fertility concerns require IVF, advanced reproductive procedures or other specialized fertility treatment, Dr. Glueck can help identify when referral to a reproductive fertility center is appropriate.

Weight management in menopause and PMOS.

Menopause care extends beyond the decision of whether to use hormone replacement therapy. Changes in weight, metabolic health and bone health are also important considerations during this stage of life. Dr. Glueck provides individualized, evidence-based treatment of these issues, including medical weight management when appropriate.

Weight management is also an important part of the treatment of many women with PMOS, where hormonal and metabolic factors can make weight loss more difficult.
